Cycle of  Sterilization

All handpieces are heat sterilized and bagged until use.  All instruments  are heat sterilized and bagged until use for a specific procedure. After  every use of an instrument it first is cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Instruments are then inspected and scrubbed if needed. Instruments are bagged in groups for a specific procedure and then heat sterilized.
Handpieces drills are bagged and heat sterilized in a separate unit.
All instruments and handpieces are keep sterile in their bags until they are opened at the start of a procedure. The heat sterilizing units are checked routinely by an independent agency to ensure that the sterilization process is actually effective in killing all microorganisms. The temperature is recorded for each cycle of the chemiclave sterilizing unit and color heat sensitive bags are used to indicate the effectiveness of every cycle.
All lab burrs are heat sterilized and individually bagged until use (upper left). Surfaces such as the x-ray head, light handles, and intercom buttons are covered during use. The coverings are changed between patients and all surfaces are additionally disinfected.
